Every four years each state votes for a governor to serve a four-year term. On November 7, 2017 the governor of New Jersey was revealed – Democrat Phil Murphy with 1,166,911 votes. Kim Guadagno, Republican, was one of the candidates who was running against Murphy and had the second highest votes. All of the candidates had very heated debates where they each fought to win over the state of New Jersey. Former U.S. president, Barack Obama, returned to the campaign trail to support Murphy’s bid for governor. Obama is one of the latest major figures in and around politics to campaign for Murphy. It wasn’t just Obama that had an impact on Murphy’s campaign; the 2016 Democratic Party nominee for president and former first lady, Hillary Clinton also voiced her opinion. She also had plans to raise money for Murphy at a private gathering on Sunday in Harrison. With former governor Chris Christie stepping down, Phil Murphy plans on re-investing in our institutions of higher education and community colleges to make them affordable. He says he will also create jobs and help the economy grow through new public bank to make investments in NJ and its people. With Phil Murphy as the new governor of New Jersey, hopefully he will bring about positive change that benefits the Garden State.
