The NFL has proposed some new major changes to the playoff format and has also thought of adding a game to the regular season. The new playoff format would look like a total of 14 teams in the playoffs instead of 12. An increase of playoff teams would be a great idea because there would be more playoffs games which means more money and increased TV ratings. Also the fans would benefit from having an extra team from each conference added because it gives their favorite team a better chance to make the playoffs. If there were 14 teams allowed in last season’s playoffs the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Los Angeles Rams would have made the playoffs as the 7 seed and would have been matched up with the 2 seed, making the 1 seeds (Ravens and 49ers) in each conference the lone team with a bye.
The NFL has also thought of adding an extra game to the regular season which would mean having an additional week, by doing this the NFL would reduce the preseason by a game. If passed it would have a similar effect as the new playoff format: more games, more revenue, and more excitement for the fans. However this idea will be harder to pass considering the amount of injuries and the physical wear that is already on all of these players through 16 games. An extra game could also be very beneficial for teams trying to make the playoffs towards the end of the year but could be very risky as more players could get injured and or become even more worn down. If these proposals are agreed upon it will be the first time since 2002 that the playoff format has changed and the first time since 1990 that there were changes with the amount weeks in a season when the NFl first had 16 games in 17 weeks. With the additions of adding one more game to the season and having two more teams in the playoffs, fans around the world would be very excited and ready for a new era of football.
