Opinion: Michigan governor should resign

Governor Rick Snyder of Michigan should resign. After hearing of the events in Flint, Michigan, one can’t help but feel anger towards him and the rest of his administration. Governor Snyder ignored the pleas of the predominantly black, and impoverished people of Flint. Citizens have been complaining since early 2015 of yellowish brown, sometimes blue, and smelly water coming out of the pipes they drink, bathe, and cook with. A few years ago, in a move to cut costs, the water supplier for the city was switched from the fresh waters of Lake Huron to the Flint River. This is not the worst of it though, as the biggest issue was the corroding of old pipes into the water.

Lead poisoning is irreversible and detrimental to the health of children and babies. It lowers IQ and can lead to behavioral issues. With all this knowledge at hand, it is crazy to think the emergency manager of Flint’s City Council vetoed the measure of returning to purchase clean water from Detroit because it was “incomprehensible.” He deemed the water “safe” and believed it was more important to save money than ensure safer water for the people.

The more I learn of this situation the more enraged I become, but it also makes me wonder. If this issue had been in a wealthier, predominantly white area of the state, would they have let it continue?  Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and demonstrators in Michigan have called for Mr. Snyder to resign. Several state officials have already resigned, including the director of the state Department of Environmental Quality and his chief spokesman, and the governor’s chief of staff and chief spokeswoman. We can only hope Governor Snyder will soon follow suit.
