WASHINGTON D.C.-Most people know the infamous names “Ben and Jerry” for their popular ice cream brand, but more recently the two have become active protesters in the Democracy Awakening group. The group is associated with Democracy Spring and supports actions on climate change, racial injustice, workers´ rights, fair pay and other various human rights reforms.

Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield were arrested outside the Capitol Building on Monday, April 18th, as part of a protest over money and politics. Along with about 300 protesters, the two were taken into custody. According the CNN, Greenfield has revealed that he thinks big money corrupts the political process. The company co-founder stated, “We need a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizen’s United, to overturn this idea that money equals free speech and that corporations are the same as people. Those two things are completely absurd,” Greenfield said, while sporting a Bernie Sanders shirt and pin. Both Greenfield and Cohen and their ice cream company have endorsed Bernie Sanders in his race for president. Cohen even created an ice cream flavor called “Bernie’s Yearning.” The flavor is mint topped with a giant chocolate chip that represents all the wealth that has gone to the top 1% of the population over the last ten years. When CNN questioned the partners about how they felt about Trump running for president, Cohen responded, “This guy isn’t there supporting regular people, believe me.”
