There have been many calls to change the faces featured on American currency, but it will become a reality in the coming years. On April 21st, it was announced that Harriet Tubman, an anti-slavery activist, will replace Andrew Jackson, the 7th U.S. president and a slave owner, on the $20 bill and Andrew Jackson will now be featured on the back of the bill.  The last woman to be featured on U.S paper currency was Martha Washington. Harriet Tubman will mark the third woman to be present on American paper currency.

There will also be changes to the $10 bill, which will now feature several women’s rights activists, such as Lucretia Mott, Sojourner Truth, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Alice Paul.  On the back of the $5 bill, important U.S. leaders will be shown, including Martin Luther King Jr., Eleanor Roosevelt, and singer Marian Anderson.

These changes are expected to happen in 2020. Releasing the new currency designs in this year will also mark the 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote. The original design would have had former Secretary of Treasury, Alexander Hamilton, replaced on the $10 bill, instead of Andrew Jackson.
