64 year old woman gives birth to twins
March 9, 2017
A 64-year-old woman gave birth to twins (a girl and a boy) via C-section in a hospital in Burgos, Spain. Mother and children are reportedly perfectly healthy.
Her age isn’t even the most shocking part – she gave birth for the first time just six years earlier at the same hospital, at the age of 58. While most people give birth under the age of 50, it is not entirely impossible to have a baby north of that age. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 600 babies with mothers between 50 and 54 years old were born in 2012. These numbers have significantly increased, with the amount being only 144 in 1997.
Just because it’s happening more and more doesn’t mean it’s not still extraordinarily risky for mother and babies. According to Mark Sauer, a doctor at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Columbia University Medical Center, there are potential situations that are rarely talked about. “What never gets picked up in these stories is there’s a lot of women doing this stuff that doesn’t work for them. They don’t get pregnant, or they miscarry, or God forbid, they have a disabled child, and now they’re maybe 50, 55, and they’ve got to deal with it. They have to be prepared for that,” he said.
Medicine, however, is improving everyday, and this could become commonplace in the future as fertility treatment becomes more and more available. People like this Spanish woman could be popping up in the news more and more.
