‘This Is Us’ finale
April 24, 2017
One of the newer shows on TV is getting bigger and bigger by the episode, and their finale got the highest viewership of the season. The show? The NBC drama This is Us. The show This is Us was second to only NCIS for the most popular show of the week for its debut season finale.
The show’s viewership reached its highest this season with 12.8 million viewers, which was a 15% jump from the previous episode and a 10-year high for the time slot. That number rose to 16.9 million when people watched via the time delay. The finale also had the most viewers for a regularly scheduled NBC scripted program since ER’s finale in 2009. The finale was also up 13% in young adults (ages 18-49) from a week earlier, setting a series record in that category, too.
Spoiler Alert: The finale focused on the relationship between Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore). The cast broke down the season finale to CNN. Many people were expecting to find out how Jack died, but they didn’t. “Sorry. Gotta wait a little longer now,” Ventimiglia said at a panel in Los Angeles after a screening of the finale. “I’ve gotten in the habit of telling people, ‘Let’s not focus on how he died or when he died, let’s focus on how he lived.'” The episode started out with Jack driving to Rebecca’s big performance after having several beers.
Throughout the rest of the show, it showed Jack and Rebecca’s marriage in peril and, in earlier flashbacks, how they met. Leading up to Rebecca and Jack’s big fight, Jack and Ben (Sam Trammell) scuffled after Jack learned that Ben tried to make a move on his wife. Rebecca had turned him down, but didn’t get a chance to tell Jack. She left her big gig to drive drunk Jack home instead. Once at home, the couple fought. Rebecca was mad that Jack was still drinking. Jack was mad that Rebecca put the band before her family. Rebecca accused Jack of resenting her taking time for herself. And Jack hit home when he said he didn’t consider Rebecca’s singing as a “career.” In the end, Rebecca asked Jack to move in with his friend Miguel. Jack agreed, but not before making a big, Jack-like proclamation of love.
The finale also dropped hints about drama that could be in season two. Kevin went to his meeting with Director Ron Howard, leaving questions about his future with Sophie. Kate told Toby she wanted to pursue singing professionally. And Randall dropped a bomb on his wife Beth when he said that he wanted to adopt a baby.
