SRHS club highlight: S.A.W

Martin MacStudy, Staff Writer

Students for Animal Welfare, S.A.W., is a popular club at Shore Regional, as well as all over the nation. Throughout the year, they donate to various charities that are for the betterment of animals. There are countless club activities S.A.W. does including, but not limited to, bake sales, Barktoberfest, and local events. One of the club’s biggest activities is Barktoberfest, a fall festival at Franklin Lake during the West Long Branch Fall Festival. At Barktoberfest we raise money by having a basket raffle, baked goods, and donation bins. This year, all proceeds from Barktoberfest went to the charity of choice, Puppies Behind Bars. Puppies Behind Bars trains inmates to raise service dogs for war veterans. As many know, some states were wrecked by Hurricanes Irma and Harvey earlier in the year. Many people left their animals behind when they decided to evacuate, leaving them in serious danger. In September, S.A.W. held a back to school night bake sale to help those animals in danger from Harvey and Irma. In addition to actively working in the school, S.A.W. also has a working relationship with the MSPCA. S.A.W. volunteers and helps at many of the MSPCA events like the Walkathon held in April. Most recently, S.A.W. members worked on making snuffle mats, plastic bath mats with strips of cloth tied through the holes and treats hidden in the cloth, for the animals at the MSPCA. All new members are welcome, all you need to do is see Mr. Labush, the advisor, or Grace Leslie, club president, and tell them you’re interested. Look out for the next meeting date!
