This year, seven Broadway shows received 10 nominations or more. That is believed to be the most shows ever with double-digit nominations in a single year. Leading the pack with 12 nominations total, including “Best New Musical”, is “Spongebob Squarepants” and “Mean Girls”. Other nominees for Best New Musical are “The Band’s Visit” and “Frozen”, with “The Band’s Visit” being the predicted favorite to win the award. Other categories include “Best Revival of a Musical”, “Best Leading Actor in a Musical” and “Best Leading Actress in a Musical”, with “Once on this Island”, Ethan Slater (“Spongebob Squarepants”) and Katrina Lenk (“The Band’s Visit) being the predicted winners of their categories, respectively.  The Tony’s are more than just a simple awards show, it goes back to the earliest days of Broadway and has a lot of history. The first ever Tony awards were on April 6, 1947. However, the award for “Best Musical” was not established until two years later, awarded to “Kiss Me, Kate” in 1949.

Be sure to tune into the 72nd Annual Tony Awards on June 10th to find out this year’s winners!
