Hurricane season has arrived

In the world of weather forecasting, June through November is known as “Atlantic Hurricane Season” with major hurricanes sweeping through the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean Sea. The season is predicted to last until November 20th.

The first storm to appear on radar was sub-tropical storm Alberto which hit near Laguna Beach, Florida in May.  In July, it was Hurricane Beryl which eventually dwindled down to a tropical storm before it hit the Caribbean Sea. Again in July, Hurricane Chris weakened to a post-tropical cyclone. In August tropical storms Debby and Ernesto were downgraded to post-tropical cyclones.

Then came the hurricane that shook our country: Hurricane Florence. This Category 2 hurricane killed at least fifty-one people on its rampage through North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. Following four more storms throughout September, Hurricane Michael has been announced.

Hurricane Michael, a Category 4 hurricane, threatens to batter Florida with life-threatening weather conditions and is being called “catastrophic”. A Category 4 or higher hurricane has never hit the Florida Panhandle and heavy rainfall, flooding, and power outages are to be expected throughout this storm.
