Surfrider Club Raises Awareness with “Bag Monster” and Contest

Staff

October was “Rise Above Plastics” month, and to take part, the Shore Regional High School Surfrider Club, advised by Mrs. McMahon, held a plastic art contest and brought out the “bag monster” at the West Long Branch Fall Festival.  Students and faculty were encouraged to clean up their local community or beach and use the waste to create art.  Winners were awarded gift cards to Rook.  At the West Long Branch Fall Festival, Surfrider Club members dressed as the “bag monster” to raise awareness about the dangers of single use plastics.  Community members were asked to guess the number of bags a typical shopper goes through in a year (500!) and winners were given a reusable Surfrider tote.  Both events were a success and the club hopes to further our message of plastics reduction throughout the year.
