Scott Kelly Returns to Earth
March 6, 2016
KAZAKHSTAN- Tuesday, March 1, 2016. A regular day for anyone living on Earth. The opposite holds true for astronaut Scott Kelly, who arrived safely back on Earth after spending 340 days on the International Space Station; a trek which became known as “a year in space”. At 11:26 P.M., Kelly touched down on Earth while aboard the Soyuz TMA-18M spacecraft in the Kazakhstan desert. He was accompanied by Russian cosmonauts Mikhail Kornienko and Sergey Volkov. The main purpose of Kelly’s ground breaking mission was to test the health effects on the human body after remaining in space for a significant amount of time. Kelly was the perfect candidate for the nearly year long journey because he shares the same DNA as his identical twin, Mark Kelly. Therefore, after his recent return, studies will be conducted on both men to see the potential affects of extended space travel on Scott Kelly’s body. The extensive trip must have weighed heavily on not only Kelly’s physical, but his mental health, as well. However, upon landing, Kelly stated, “I could go for another 100 days of 100 years.” As nerve-wracking as the journey must have been, Kelly has shared that the risk involved with the groundbreaking trip was worth the experience. The sense of fulfillment and excitement seemed to overshadow Kelly’s fears. As happy as Kelly must be to have both feet planted on Earth, everyone who has followed his journey is just as happy for him to be home with family and friends.
