“Bring Your Child to Work Day”
An interview with Delani and Leo Labush

So to start, I want to ask a few simple questions. What are your names and how old are you?
Leo: My name is Leo. I’m nine years old.
And your name is Delani, right?
Delani: Yes. I’m six.
So, what is your favorite subject?
Leo: My favorite subject…..history!
Delani: Art.
What do you want be when grow up?
Delani: A singer.
Leo: Can I say two things?
Of course! Sure!
Leo: Well, a veterinarian and NHL hockey player!
Tell me one of your favorite things,. It could be a game, a song, a book, an activity, a movie…
Leo: [My favorite activity is] drawing.
Delani: [My favorite songs are] Juju on the Beat… oh and Firework.
Favorite food?
Leo: Um…. vanilla ice cream.
Delani: Hmm, cookie monster ice cream.
Favorite color?
Delani: Pink and purple. And Leo likes pink and blue
So, what did you guys do today?
Leo: I played in gym 2nd period and 3rd period, did lots of running around, and hung out with dad. Since I wasn’t with him most the time, when I was with him I sat quietly.
Delani: I ran around a lot and played kickball in gym. I also did pushups and raced. We went weight room to give Mr. Rankin thank you cards for inviting us to gym class. We also saw the fish. And we also got cinnamon and s’more pop tarts from the cafe. We went to the art room and I got take a picture. Mrs. Lavin and Mrs. Bertolami gave us [all of the teachers’ children] art supplies [and] I went to the copy room and helped make copies.
Now over to you, Mr. Labush. I think it would be unfair of me to ask you all the typical questions so we’ll start with your favorite color?
Delani: Green!
Favorite subject?
Mr. Labush: English and Psychology, of course.
And lastly, favorite food?
Mr. Labush: Black bean burrito.
So, what do you think the challenges are when working with your kids?
Mr. Labush: Um, there aren’t many challenges. It really isn’t that big of a deal. It just takes a bit more energy.
And the rewards?
Mr. Labush: Spending time with them., being that I don’t get to seem them during the day and they get to see a bit of what I do.
What do you think is the value of today’s activities?
Mr. Labush:I think they can learn a lot from the students. They tell me they genuinely like the students and the teachers. They are able to make some connections.
